Ward 10 residents hear information about Issue 40, early voting, gun locks and a Kent State program about GED access

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. Those in attendance included: Council Member Sharon Connor, a representative from Summit County Children’s Services, LaDarrius Steele of Kent State University, four Akron Police Department officers, and six members of the public.

Connor called the meeting to order and introduced the representative from Summit County Children’s Services (SCCS) who said that they have a renewal issue (Issue 40) on the ballot for the Nov 5 election.

The SCCS representative said that Issue 40 is a levy and the funds would cover about 60% of their operating costs, the majority of which goes toward placement costs for children including foster care. They also said SCCS served 1 in 12 children in Summit County last year.

An Akron Police Department (APD) officer spoke next about their gun violence reduction initiative and the importance of locking up guns. They said that there have been 350 firearm related offenses in Akron this year. Free gun locks and informational handouts were available.

Steele spoke about a flag football league for kids in Goodyear Heights Metro Park. He said about 75 kids play at the Eastwood location, and they are having an end of season celebration and “trunk or treat” on Oct 26 at 12:00 p.m. Residents are invited to attend and participate.

Steele shared about a grant his department, Upward Bound at Kent State, has to educate about GED access. He requested that members of the public contact him with any outreach opportunities for this project. His contact information can be found here: kent.edu/uoe/ladarrius-…

Connor said that Akron Mayor Shammas Malik will be attending the next Ward 10 meeting to discuss the capitol budget and how people can get items they’re interested in incorporated in the budget.

Connor also said that they are collecting words to be used in a word cloud wallpaper that will be installed in the new Reservoir Park Community Center. The words should fall within the theme of water, can residents with ideas can email them to Connor at sconnor1@neo.rr.com.

APD Captain Jason Malick introduced himself as the new Zone 2 Commander. Malick said he is now covering Ellet, Goodyear Heights, and North Hill.
