christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 7/60

Councilmember Waters is giving a presentation with Dr. Erica Robertson of the Adult Literacy Task Force https://michiganchronicle.com/dr-erica-robertson-transforms-youth-education-by-harnessing-the-power-of-superhero-stories/

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 8/60

Dr. Katrina Kelly is also on the task force, along with Dr. Leah Van Belle

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 9/60

I apologize - the prior link to the agenda was incorrect! his is the correct #agenda https://detroitmi.gov/government/city-clerk/city-council-agendas-documents

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 10/60

Dr. Robertson is outlining the goals of the task force and some of their obstacles.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 11/60

Dr. Katrina Kelly Wicker is referencing a program in Minnesota that has been around for 50 years as a model. https://www.literacymn.org/

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 12/60

Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City have other models to look to:

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 13/60

Dr. Van Belle says that people exist that are doing this (literacy improvement) work but they need more resources and capacity.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 14/60

In year 2 of the task force, they need to establish reliable funding, and build stronger partnerships with existing programs and orgs. Connect for Care is one that exists for kids that could be helpful if expanded for adults. https://unitedwaysem.org/resources/connect4care/

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 15/60
christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 16/60

Dr. Kelly Wicker is highlighting that we have top-tier universities in this state that could help with collecting the data needed. And this is what is needed from City Council:

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 17/60

The Literacy Task Force has paused their meetings until they get direction and support from the City Council. Dr. Van Belle highlighted the urgency of moving forward with support. She says only 5% of 4th graders in Detroit were reading at their grade level when tested last year.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 18/60

Member Durhal has arrived and is strongly in support of the task force, especially for workforce strengthening.
Dr. Robertson thanked him and referenced the school to prison pipeline. She says 70% of incarcerated individuals have below a 3rd grade reading level.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 19/60

Members Johnson and Benson also gave strong support for the task force.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 20/60

Member Santiago-Romero also arrived a few minutes ago.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 21/60

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 27/60

Meeting is being called back to order following the disruption. All are present aside from Member Benson.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 28/60

President Mary Sheffield says they have offered Ms. Logan (the woman removed) time and direct help and support in the past, but she did not want to talk.

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 29/60

A man is talking about the Solar Neighborhood proposals. He says the proposal is 400 pages long, being presented to neighborhood citizens and they are difficult to understand. To learn more about this issue from his perspective, visit https://www.detroitsolarscam.com/

christianabeckley.bsky.social @christianabeckley.bsky.social 30/60
